ConsultRichard Apps

These apps are written in Java, and have counterparts as Android apps. As they are written in Java, and distributed as jar files, they will run on any machine with Java installed. Which means they will run on Windows, Linux, Macs, and just about everything else. I have done my development with Java 1.7.0, so machines with an older version would need to update the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) to run the jar files. In many cases, there will be a totally free, limited functionality version, and then a paid version with full functionality. I recommend trying the free version first, and if it seems like something you like, then buy the paid version. Trying the free version first should prevent any disappointments. All items purchased will be emailed after payment clears.

IC - IndexCards

Index Cards have been used to hold drink recipes (ask any bartender), food recipes (ask any cook), flash cards to study, and many other purposes. Rolodexes are made to hold business cards (mini index cards). For something so useful and flexible, where is the software equivalent?

The software equivalent is right here. Way back when, long ago and far away, when PCs were 16 bits and ran Windows 3.x, an Index Card program was included with the OS. Microsoft dropped the Index Card program when Windows 95 came out, so I wrote my own, and have been using it happily for many years.

My address book - an Index Card file. You know how software you buy comes with a key code that needs to be entered when you install it? Another Index Card file. You know how all the web sites you visit want you to create a user name and password? Another Index Card file to keep track. Favorite recipes? Another Index Card file. Bartenders can leave their index card file at home, and just use their Android smart phone. Students can create flash cards and study anytime.

When I get something like a new camera, I condense the User Manual into an Index Card file so I always have the instructions with me. Sometimes software only has on-line help, so with a little copy and paste I have my own offline help. Thinking about writing the Great American Novel? Creating a first draft is easy with each chapter on a separate card. Or maybe you just want to keep a diary or journal. The possibilities are endless.

IC - IndexCards - allows one to create Index Card Files for anything. Drink recipes, food recipes, flash cards as a study aid, address books, and so forth. There is a companion program, ICR, IndexCardReader, which is available for free so that one may freely distribute the files that one creates with IC. Download the free Drinks app to get an idea of how IC looks and works.

Personally I prefer to do my input on a desktop computer, and then transfer the data files to my android device. But there are both desktop and Android versions of IC available if you want to be able to create and modify icf (Index Card File) files. Bartenders note that Drinks.icf can be downloaded to give you a leg up on your drink file. It is even possible to purchase both versions. Just remember that you will have to manually sync the files if you are changing them on multiple devices. Click below to purchase. After payment clears you will receive your product by email.

Usage - Analyze Storage Usage

Running out of space and you can not figure out why? Usage will help. Just select the directory to analyze and usage will recursively read thru all subdirectories and show you exactly how much space is being used. Change to a subdirectory and reanalyze. Use on any drive. Once I was running out of space on C: and had no idea why. I ran Usage and quickly found that my video editor was saving ungodly amounts of data about the various projects. I deleted the data and had plenty of space on C: again. When I ran it on my ACER A500 Android Tablet I was able to free up 1.3 G of space that was saving thumbnails of pictures no longer on the device.

Usage can be used on your internal hard drive, your memory sticks and anything else. Maybe you want to back up your photos. Usage can tell you how many CDs, DVDs, or what size memory stick to use. Or maybe you need to trim some fat so what you have will fit on the memory stick you already have. Since Usage shows you what you have, you can decide what you do and do not need. Rerun after deleting some files and see if you have what you need.
